Basic Academic Requirement
A pass in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia or an equivalent qualification with a credit in Bahasa Malaysia 
 

Higher Academic Requirement
A pass in STPM with principals in Pengajian Am and two science subjects
For candidates with other qualifications, a Diploma from ITM, UTM, UPM or other institutions recognized for the fields that are relevant to the program, or other equivalent qualifications.


Specific Requirements:
Priority will be given to candidates with a good principal in Mathematics, Advance Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.


Bahasa Malaysia Requirement
A candidate who is a citizen of Malaysia must be in possession of a credit in Bahasa Malaysia at Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia / Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM/MCE) level or its equivalent before permitted to register for a higher degree at this University. Foreign candidates will be required to study Bahasa Malaysia and pass a prescribed examination which is equivalent to Sijil Rendah Pelajaran / Lower Certificate of Education (SRP/LCE) during their period of candidature at this University. Further, individual Schools or Centres are not precluded from specifying additional language or other requirements.


Bahasa Malaysia Requirements In Thesis Writing and Course Work
With effect from the 1983/84 academic session, candidates in the Arts programmes are required to submit their thesis written in Bahasa Malaysia. For the Sciences, this requirement was made effective from the 1986/87 academic session. However, candidates may apply for exemption if the field of study undertaken does not allow for the thesis to be written in Bahasa Malaysia or no suitable external examiners who are proficient in the language could be appointed. With effect from the 1986/87 academic session, all taught courses are also conducted and examined fully in Bahasa Malaysia


English Language
Foreign students are required to have a minimum standard of proficiency in English. For this purpose, the University administers a diagnostic test and where applicable may require students to attend remedial English classes. Those unable to meet these minimum standards may be required to withdraw from the programme concerned.


ACADEMIC STRUCTURE 

Each academic year will be divided into two semesters with each semester consisting fifteen (15) weeks of teaching, learning and examinations. The examinations will be held at the end of the semester. The academic level courses can be divided into 100, 200, 300 and 400 level courses, which are equivalent to the First, Second, Third and the Fourth Year respectively. Students are allowed to register a minimum of 9 units and a maximum of 20 units each semester.The allocation for each unit depends on the category of the courses offered as listed below:

Theoretical Courses : each unit for this type of courses is equivalent to 14 hours of teaching and tutorials per semester.


Practical Courses / Laboratories : each unit is equivalent to 21 hours for each semester.
Industrial Training : This course is conducted over 10 weeks during the long break after Semester II at level 300. The  training begins early May and ends before Semester I of the final year commences.


However, the status of a student will only depend on the accumulated unit the student has acquired as shown below:
