Technical Visit from Makerspace@EngLib

On 23 January 2024, the Makerspace@EngLib team paid a technical visit to the School of Aerospace Engineering USM, to gain technical and engineering insights into the design and fabrication processes utilized in the school.

This initiative was led by Pn. Sukmawati Binti Muhamad, Deputy Chief Librarian, and Pn. Jamilah Hassan Basri, Senior Librarian, both from the USM Engineering Library. Their primary goal was to explore ways to enhance the Makerspace@EngLib facilities, particularly in optimizing their 3D printing and laser-cutting technologies, ensuring better support for students.

Moreover, the visit aimed to expand their knowledge of 3D design—a core discipline in Aerospace Engineering. By understanding the advanced practices in design and fabrication at the school, the team sought to implement similar standards and techniques in their makerspace, thereby improving their service offerings and fostering innovation among the USM community.

The visit was hosted by En. Zihad, Vocational Training Officer, and supported by technical staff from the School of Aerospace Engineering. Together, the two teams engaged in meaningful discussions about potential collaborations to bridge the gap between technical resources and knowledge-sharing opportunities. The dialogue highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in nurturing innovation and enhancing the learning experience for students.

During the visit, the Makerspace@EngLib team was given hands-on demonstrations of various engineering processes, including detailed explanations of 3D design principles and fabrication workflows. These insights helped clarify the practical applications of advanced tools and techniques, allowing the team to better understand how these processes could be integrated into their own makerspace.

The visit culminated in a deeper understanding of the synergies between the two institutions. By combining the expertise of the School of Aerospace Engineering with the facilities and services of Makerspace@EngLib, both organizations are poised to create a more enriching environment for students and researchers alike. The experience not only strengthened professional ties but also laid the groundwork for future collaborations aimed at driving innovation and academic excellence within USM.
