Dr. Chang Wei Shyang

Currently serving as a senior lecturer at the School of Aerospace Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Dr. Chang Wei Shyang is striving to make the best out of this tenure for the benefits of all – the university, the students and the community. With his name, “Wei” which means maintaining and “Shyang” which means flying, Dr. Chang aims to bring honour to the name of the university, help the students to explore their potentials and expand the opportunities between academia and industries.

After earning his Bachelor Degree in Aerospace Engineering (Hons.) from USM, Dr. Chang pursued further studies in the same field, focusing on Numerical Method development in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) where his research broke new ground in the new Flux Difference Scheme within the Shallow Water Equations framework. His work has been featured in top-tier journals and has steadily gained attention in the community.

Aside from numerical method, Dr. Chang is also active in the application aspect of CFD, involving in projects of various aerodynamic analyses or optimisations for wind turbines, winglets, rockets, rotor blades, and even ground vehicles. He has involved in some consultancy works as the team member for CFD simulations on water flows, combustions and dust particle flows.

Dr. Chang primarily teaches Flight Performance and Computational-Aided Engineering Design, and is also involved in courses such as Computational Fluid Dynamics and Aircraft Aerodynamics. Active learning is the way to go in Dr. Chang’s class, inspired and motivated individuals will attain not only the technical content, but the skills to learn in general, which is crucial in the future days of all students regardless of which profession they step into.

Dr. Chang has graduated one Master student in 2024 and he works closely with students. Students do not learn only in classrooms, Dr. Chang has been the advisors for 2 students clubs, with his main goal to empower the students to lead and organise, as a stepping stone to be future leaders of the world.

With a passion for research, teaching, and student mentorship, Dr. Chang continues to drive progress within both the university and the broader aerospace engineering community.
