Dr. Nurul Musfirah Mazlan
Dr. Nurul Musfirah Mazlan is a lecturer in Aerospace Propulsion at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), where she has made significant contributions to research, teaching, and community engagement. She holds a PhD in Biofuel Combustion Technologies from Cranfield University, UK (2013), MSc in Thermal Power from Cranfield University, UK (2008), and Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Aerospace Engineering from USM (2006). Her expertise lies in propulsion systems, biofuels, and sustainable energy technologies, particularly in sustainable aviation fuels.
In the last 5 years, Dr. Musfirah has authored over 15 publications in leading international journals. She has secured multiple research grants, including an active Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) grant worth RM 127,500, focusing on the mechanistic and kinetic studies of nano-additives in biofuels. In addition, she has been involved in industry collaborations and consulting work, including projects related to sustainable aviation fuels.
She has supervised 8 PhD and 12 master's students, covering topics such as alternative fuels, combustion performance, and rocket propulsion. Several of her students have already completed their degrees, reflecting her dedication to advancing research in aerospace engineering. At the undergraduate level, she has supervised numerous final-year projects, guiding students in research areas such as biofuels, turbine performance, and computational simulations. She teaches various aerospace engineering courses, including thermodynamics, propulsion systems, and aerospace laboratories. She employs various active learning activities in class such as peer teaching, jigsaw, and games.
Her community service efforts include participation in national-level STEM outreach programs such as Aerofair as well as contributing to the continuous improvement of academic standards. Her recent project is Community Engagement with a secondary school nearby to empowering Science and Mathematics among the students. Dr. Musfirah is a member of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), and her work has been recognized through awards such as the Best Presentation Paper Award at the International Conference on Recent Advances in Sustainable Energy Research (RAISER 2021).
In addition to her research and teaching, Dr. Musfirah is a passionate advocate for sustainable aerospace technologies, playing an instrumental role in shaping the future of biofuels and propulsion systems.
