PROFESSOR

A CFD journey through deep-thinking and mathematics.

Professor Farzad Ismail was educated from the first degree up to PhD at University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, USA. His academic passion is on everything related to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), from theoretical methods and algorithm developments to CFD applications in solving various scientific and engineering problems. Being in the CFD field for the past 20 years have led him to exclusive opportunities and challenges in research and teaching at multiple academic institutions together with consultancy jobs at the industry.

His CFD philosophy is to seek and solve difficult problems that will have an impact to the aerospace or aerospace-related field. One of his CFD obsessions is to design accurate, reliable and efficient numerical methods that can easily be used for complex industrial applications. The research in his group primarily involves modeling and solving fluid transport with heat transfer. The work is mostly done using pen and paper, whiteboards, and computers for the numerical experiments. Partial differential equations, numerical analysis, fluid dynamics and computer programming are the bread and butter for this CFD research group.

The USM-Aerospace-CFD research group is a mixture of students and faculty members having engineering, physics or applied mathematics background. They believe in doing research by asking difficult questions, taking them through a journey of a series of questions until they see a light at the end.
