MAGDAS INSTALLATION IN USM ENGINEERING CAMPUS

On 17th September 2019, the 7th MAGDAS station has been successfully installed in USM Engineering Campus, and Space System Lab is the host for this station. MAGDAS stands for Magnetic Data Acquisition System is a magnetometer to detect and observe the Earth and space magnetic field. This project is under International Center for Space Weather Science and Education (ICSWSE), Kyushu University, Japan and in Malaysia, is monitored by Malaysia Space Agency (MYSA). The objectives of this project are to support technical data for geomagnetic research in Malaysia for space weather research and development and to involve in International Heliophysical Year (IHY) under UNOOSA, UN. In Malaysia, another six stations are located in UiTM Pasir Gudang, MYSA in Banting, UPSI, Langkawi, UNISZA in Terengganu and Ranau, Sabah.
MAGDAS is a system that included a magnetometer and data logger. The data collected is transmitted in real-time to the data centre in Kyushu University. There are more than 80 MAGDAS stations all over the world and this make MAGDAS system is the world largest real-time magnetometer array for space and earth electromagnetism observation.
